Studies on Glucagon Receptor and Antagonists of Glucagon Receptor for the Management of Diabetes Mellitus

Image
CURRENT RESEARCH IN DIABETES & OBESITY JOURNAL   JUNIPER PUBLISHERS Authored by Ghulam Abbas Abstract Glucagon receptor plays an important role in the glucose homeostasis and thus is drug target for the management of hyperglycemia in type-2 diabetes mellitus. The suppression of glucagon secretion from the alpha-cells is the key to control hyperglycemic condition. The identification of non-peptide antagonists of glucagon receptor is an effective therapeutic approach to inhibit the glucagon secretion to achieve normal glucose index. Keywords:  Glucagon receptor; Hyperglycemia; Diabetes mellitus; Antagonists Go to Introduction Background Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder which is spreading at an alarming rate all over the world. Glucagon receptor belongs to the G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) superfamily and an important drug target for type-2 diabetes [1]. G-Proteins (guanine nucleotide binding proteins) actually act as molecular switches to turn o...

Influence of Iron Deficiency Anemia on HbA1c: A Review

Image
CURRENT RESEARCH IN DIABETES & OBESITY JOURNAL   JUNIPER PUBLISHERS Authored by Ghulam N Bader Abstract Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) is widely used as a diagnostic tool for diabetes. Many clinical conditions affect erythrocyte turnover which influence HbA1c levels. These levels are lowered by different forms of anemia, but reverse is the case in iron deficiency anemia (IDA). This is suggested by various studies which propose an increase in HbA1c levels in patients with IDA. However, there are studies which negate any influence of IDA over HbA1c levels. In both cases the clinical data is not sufficient to confirm or nullify the role of IDA in increasing HbA1c levels. Go to Introduction Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), a glycated hemoglobin is formed by an irreversible, slow non-enzymatic catalysis of the β chain of globin in mature hemoglobin (Hb) [1,2]. It is used as a gold standard for monitoring glycemic status for the previous three months (the life span of a red blood cell) in pati...

Nutritional and Medicinal Properties of Stevia Rebaudiana

Abstract Researches on new molecules with the least toxic effects and better potency is on its way and more attention is being given upon medicinal plants for forcing away the above problems. Medicinal plants have been recognized as potential drug candidates. Stevia, a natural sweetener with medicinal properties and also having nutritional, therapeutic and industrial importance is being used all over the world. Stevia rebaudiana leaves are usually referred to as candy, sweet and honey leaves. Diterpene glycosides are responsible for its high sweetening potential of leaves. The phytochemical properties of bioactive chemicals present in stevia leaves are involves in maintaining the physiological functions of human body. Paper also highlights the importance of nutritional aspects of dried stevia leaves, metabolism of stevia, effects of it consumption on human health and clinical studies related to stevia ingestion. Various medicinal properties of stevia leaves discussed in...

Analysis of Inflammatory Cytokines in Pre-Diabetic Subjects

CURRENT RESEARCH IN DIABETES & OBESITY JOURNAL JUNIPER PUBLISHERS       Authored by Saket Gupta   Abstract Objective: Pre-diabetes is defined as either impaired fasting glucose ((IFG) between 5.6 and 6.9mmol/l) or impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) wherein fasting or post-prandial plasma glucose levels are above normal levels, but below that of clinical Type-2-Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM). Both IFG and IGT, risk factors for T2DM and macrovascular diseases, have previously been linked with inflammation. With this in mind, we sought to comparatively evaluate the levels of inflammatory markers in pre-diabetics relative to normal healthy individuals. Methods: We determined the levels of serum cytokines in a cohort of 9 patients with pre-diabetes and thirty four individuals with normal glucose control using a 96-Well Multi-array 7-plex assay or 1-plex IFN-β and Rantes 96-well plates (Meso Scale Discovery, Gaithersburg, Maryland, USA). Results: ...
